What is “mindfulness”
Mindfulness involves cultivating present-moment awareness used to enhance emotional regulation, reduce stress and anxiety, and promote overall well-being. By encouraging individuals to observe their thoughts and feelings non-judgmentally, mindfulness helps to create a sense of calm, improve focus, and foster a deeper connection to oneself. This makes it particularly effective in managing the impacts of trauma and grief, allowing for healing and resilience in the face of challenging emotions.

What does the research say about mindfulness practices and healing?
Studies show that mindfulness-based practices significantly reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, increase emotional regulation by promoting greater awareness of emotions and reducing reactivity leading to healthier coping mechanisms during challenging times, and has been shown to lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol and improve overall physiological stress responses, contributing to better physical health outcomes. Mindfulness training has also been associated with improvements in attention and cognitive flexibility, helping individuals to stay present and focused, which can be beneficial in managing trauma related symptoms.
How old do the participants need to be?
At this time, classes and sessions are limited to those 13 years of age or older.
What are the risks?
Any activity that explores painful or difficult thoughts and feelings may increase painful emotions that are challenging to process. In order to ensure these feelings are managed in an open and safe way, our instructor pays close attention to the readiness of our participants to attend and participate in mindfulness coaching sessions, as well as monitoring reactions to ensure your experience remains within your ability to explore without becoming overwhelmed. Furthermore, your clinician is prepared to help process your experience and the outcomes of your sessions.
Can mindfulness replace traditional medical or therapeutic treatments?
No. Mindfulness practices complement all other types of medical and therapeutic treatments. Mindfulness practices should not be used as a substitute for consultation or a physician, a practitioner or natural therapeutics or a psychotherapist. Mindfulness practices can increase the efficacy of other types of healing.
